Aazol Unpolished Indrayani Rice is a highly aromatic, medium-grain native rice from Maharashtra, with a naturally soft, sticky texture. Sold by Aazol: Tasty & Nutritious Home-grown Foods, it is stone-retained unpolished rice - the outer bran layer is kept intact for a nuttier taste and higher nutrition than polished white rice.
What it is:
Indrayani is a medium-grain chawal developed in 1987 by crossing the heritage Ambemohar variety with a high-yielding rice, and is named after the Indrayani River that flows through the Sahyadri mountains (Western Ghats).
Where it comes from:
It is grown by collectives of natural farmers in Maharashtra's tribal belts - including the Maval and Mulshi areas of Pune, Nashik, and Dhule district - and sourced directly from farmer groups such as Dongredev Shetkari, with no middlemen and no chemicals or pesticides.
Health benefits:
Because the bran is retained, it is fibre-rich, naturally cholesterol-free and low-sodium (heart-friendly), trans-fat-free, naturally gluten-free, and offers sustained, slow-release energy - making it suitable for everyday wholesome meals and balanced nutrition.
How to use it:
Its sticky texture is ideal for traditional Maharashtrian meals like varan bhaat, masale bhaat, khichdi, curd rice, and kheer, and works equally well as a base for pulao, sushi, and Thai-style rice. Pairs naturally with dal, curries, chutneys, and Aazol's Gharwala Ghee.

Provenance
The original Indrayani chawal, a medium grain native rice, owes its existence to another unique variety, Ambemohar. It’s low yield and susceptibility to disease saw farmers cross the Ambemohar with a high-yielding variety to develop the Indrayani, named after the river that flows through the Sahyadri Mountains. It’s now a staple in most traditional Marathi homes, and a favourite with grandmothers who feed fussy kids little pellets of rice mixed with desi ghee and Metkoot (lentil spice mix).

Unpolished means the outer bran layer of the rice is retained, keeping its natural flavour and nutrients intact. Unlike heavily processed white rice, it has a nuttier taste and slightly chewier texture.
Yes — it is naturally grown by local Maharashtrian farmers without the use of any chemicals or pesticides. It is sourced directly from trusted farmers without middlemen.
Indrayani rice is shorter, stickier and richly fragrant, making it ideal for comforting homely meals. Basmati, by contrast, is long-grained and non-sticky, better suited for biryanis and pulaos.
It works beautifully in pulao, kheer, khichdi and curd rice, and pairs well with dal, curries and chutneys. Its sticky texture also makes it a great base for sushi and Thai-style rice dishes as well.
Yes — its natural stickiness gives desserts like kheer a wonderfully creamy consistency. It pairs especially well with cardamom, jaggery, and dry fruits.
Since the bran layer is retained, it is a good source of dietary fibre that supports digestion. It is also naturally cholesterol-free, making it a heart-friendly grain.
Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and pests. Proper storage preserves its flavour, aroma and quality for longer.
Aazol sources directly from a collective of natural farmers in Maharashtra, ensuring you get fresh, authentic, chemical-free rice without it passing through multiple middlemen. Every purchase also directly supports local tribal farming communities.
